A Guide To Santorini Greece
The Greek Island of Santorini is one of the country’s most popular destinations. The volcanic island is one of the southernmost of the Cyclades, which are in the Aegean Sea southeast of Athens. It is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Greece and is often called the black pearl of the Aegean. The volcanic landscape features steep, dark cliffs with white villages that overlook the blue sea below and have breathtaking views.
There are 13 villages on the island, and while Oia is perhaps the most well known, Fira is the capital. Below this town, which is located several hundred meters up on the black rocks, is the port of Skala, and visitors can climb the 566 steps to reach Fira. For those not accustomed to such a walk, there are donkeys, pack mules and a funicular, which takes all of two minutes.
The island offers a number of fascinating beaches, historical sites and plenty of nightlife for visitors to enjoy. The Kamari-Avis Beach is a black, sandy beach that stretches for five kilometers on the east coast of the island and has lots of entertainment spots nearby. Water sports enthusiasts like to visit Perissa, one of the most popular beaches on the island. Santorini is known for its fine wine, and each fall the island comes alive as the year’s harvest is brought in and crushed. There are also a number of ancient Greek and Roman villages and sites.
The Santorini Airport (JTR) is a small, international airport located in the middle of the island, 8 kilometers southeast of Firo. It has daily commercial flights to and from Athens, and in the summer there are many charter flights that fly in from all over the world. Santorini is also connected to the other Aegean islands and Athens’ port city of Piraeus by ferry. The trip from Piraeus takes about five hours.
