Autumn in Crete
Crete is the most popular Greek island for visitors and international home buyers at any time of the year. Autumn is, however, an ideal season to visit this long island, take part in some of the many festivals and enjoy the warm, dry Mediterranean climate as it gets colder and wetter across much of Europe. With the crowds mostly gone, you can slow down and enjoy the sites and beaches of this idyllic island.
Autumn in Crete is a pretty time to be on the island, as you can enjoy the flowers and festivals that celebrate this time of the year. The hills and valleys are full of beautiful wild flowers, trees and shrubs. The kermes oak bears acorns while the scarlet fruits of the strawberry tree provide a spectacle in the hills. The still warm weather is accompanied by a season of olive & grape harvesting and pressing for oil and wine, and raki production is fired in copper stills. Along with the harvests are numerous festivals and celebrations. It is a spectacular time to visit and participate in the festivals, many of which take place in the the Amari Valley in the middle of Crete.
As befitting the time of the year, it is a good time to look for homes away from the crowds. There are many small villages along the coast and inland with homes for sale, and some resort properties as well. If you like it quieter and less crowded you might want to look on the southern part of the island. It is warmer and drier here, and so it will have a longer season, but it tends to be much less crowded than the northern coast. Agia Gallini is the main southern town and is located about halfway across the island.
On the north coast, the far east and west have some very popular summer resorts, notably around Malia on the northeast coast and Chania on the northwest. The fall is a good time to look for bargains, as the resorts begin to clear out. Other popular destinations include the pretty coast around Rethymno and the largest city of Heraklion. Wherever you choose to go, Crete in the autumn is a wonderful place to be.
